We went in on Friday to see the OB again. The plan was to stretch the membrane one more time, then I’ll go in on Saturday morning for the induction. After she performed membrane stretching and assessment, she asked if we want to check in for the induction since I was already 3cm dilated and baby wasn’t very active in the past 24 hours. Instead of being wheeled into the labor & delivery department with Mckayla, this time I was able to walk from the OB office to the hospital on my own. Shortly after we checked in, I was hooked up with the monitor and IV line. About four in the afternoon, I was finally started on Pitocin at a very low rate (2 drops per hour). The plan was to slowly increase the dosage every half an hour. By around five thirty, I started to feel the strong contractions and requested for the epidural. The anesthesiologist arrived shortly and soon after that the strong contraction pain was replaced by pressure in the lower abdomen. Around six thirty, an OB resident came in to check on the status of cervix dilation. At that point, it was about 6 cm and the pitocin was put on hold. The nurse continued her assessment after the resident has left. Then, all the sudden, I noticed the baby’s heart rate was dropping. I was asked to change position but it didn’t help. Then, she placed the oxygen mask on my face and got on the phone asking for help. Within seconds, the room was filled with nurses and doctors. Cervix was fully dilated at this point and I was asked to start pushing. With every contraction, baby’s heart rate dipped. At one point, his heart rate dropped to the 70′s. After a few pushes, I was told to take a break and let the baby “recover” a bit before we start pushing again. We waited for another fifteen minutes but his heart rate continued to drop with every contraction. One of the MD told us it’s probably because the umbilical cord is wrapped around his neck. I was asked to start pushing again with every contraction. Because I wasn’t making enough progress so the plan was to vacuum him out if I couldn’t do in on my own with the next couple pushes. Luckily, we were able to see him crowning with a few more pushes and finally he came out on his own. Here’s Marcus Jhih-Kai Kao born on 3/5/2010 @ 8:44PM, weight 8lb 3.4 oz, length 19.4 inches.
